Tokyo stocks open higher on overnight rises on Wall Street

TOKYO , Jan. 16 -- ( Kyodo ) _ Tokyo stocks opened moderately higher Thursday on continued advances by U.S. stocks overnight and a sharp rise in November machinery orders in Japan . In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 78.49 points, or 0.50 percent, from Wednesday to 15,887.22. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 7.73 points, or 0.60 percent, to 1,302.25.
