Hungarian right-wingers invade Gay Pride parade

The Sydney News.Net
Saturday 5th July, 2008

Hungarian riot police have waded into far-right extremists after they tried to break up the annual gay parade in the capital Budapest.

Hundreds of far-right demonstrators threw petrol bombs and stones as the police tried to separate them from the participants of the march.

Police retaliated with water cannons and tear gas to break up the violent youths.

Riot police detained 45 people, but only after eight people were wounded in the clashes, including two policemen.

Although homosexuality was legalised in eastern Europe after the collapse of communism, gay parades are often at the center of scorn and violence.

Last year, participants of the Hungarian gay parade were pelted with eggs.

At the time, Amnesty International criticised Hungary for what it said was a failure to protect the peaceful march.

Hungarian right-wingers invade Gay Pride parade

Humans seems to want to tell other humans what to think! Both sides should stay at home and keep their opinions to themselves.. On the other hand it is good to bring these issues into the open and discuss them. just wish it was about something a little more interesting that what sexual positions we preferr

Democracy is not about giving up yourself

Both sides should stay at home and keep their opinions to themselves?
I don’t think so!

Gays and their supporters are fully authorized by democratic norms to express themselves as a community. Those who physically attack them ignore the very same norms, and give further proof of the very justifiability of gay people taking to the streets with their claims.

Threatened with death for taking a walk

If that is the case (that people should keep their opinions to themselves) then the gay pride march should have been a safe place to be. I was in the march myself. It was the first time for me to do anything like this and I was so struck by the absurdity of the intense rage being directed at us when all we were doing was *walking*. Nothing threatening, violent, or anything was coming from the marchers side, but even just passers-by were moved to screaming rage. It was quite a sight to see — such hatred! How must it be like to live your life filled with such hatred!!

When the raw power of these words are discovered living the word word

Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. A second likewise is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."
