Ingrid Betancourt receives medical opinion

The Sydney News.Net
Saturday 5th July, 2008

Ingrid Betancourt has been told by doctors in Paris she has suffered no side-effects from her kidnapping ordeal.

Ms Betancourt was given a clean bill of health on Saturday after medical tests at a Paris military hospital.

The 46-year-old former hostage, who was freed on Wednesday, said she was surprised not to have any physical side-effects after more than six years of captivity in the hands of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

The doctors however have recommended rest for Betancourt, who has faced numerous interviews, press conferences and official receptions.

Betancourt said in a radio interview earlier she had been chained up night and day for three years by her captors.

She has also revealed that she was tortured and at one stage was so depressed she could no longer have a bath or leave her hammock.

She paid tribute to one of her fellow-captive, Colombian army corporal William Perez, saying he had saved her life.

Perez, who was freed along with Betancourt, said she was very ill at one stage and could no longer eat.

Doctors have warned Betancourt against the psychological effects of her captivity, following the initial euphoria, including depression.

Ingrid Betancourt receives medical opinion

If Ingrid Betancourt, had been a United State’s prisoner, and branded a terriorist, and renditioned, would she be in as good as shape as she seems to be during this long cruel internment with FARC? I don’t think so.
