US elderly in trouble over fuel prices

The Sydney News.Net
Sunday 6th July, 2008

The elderly in the US are finding the going tough because of prices at the fuel bowser.

Agencies around the country that provide services to the elderly, have cut back on programs like Meals on Wheels, transportation assistance and home care.

Older poor people rely not just on social service agencies, but also on volunteers.

Gas costs have stopped volunteers from using their own vehicles for transport.

Volunteers, especially in rural areas, often use their own cars and supply the gasoline.

Agencies say they are facing a shortage of home aides, because the jobs have low pay and often require long drives.

The home care crisis is also being extended to services such as school bus routes, police patrols and garden maintenance.
