U.S. equity markets lower

Stocks were largely lower Friday, giving up some of their heady gains of the past week.

At the close of trading the Dow Jones Industrials were down 122.42 points or 1.65% at 7,278.38.

The Nasdaq Composite was down 26.21 points or 1.71% at 1,457.27.

The Standard and Poor's 500 was off 15.50 points or 1.98% at 768.54.

The U.S. dollar was steady after its major losses this week.

Around the New York close the euro was quoted at 1.3560. The British pound was fetching 1.4435. The Japanese yen was changing hands at 95.91.

The Swiss franc was firm at 1.1292, as was the Australian dolar at .6855. The Canadian dollar was quoted at 1.2416.
